The 10-Step Karl Moore Diet!
Struggling with your diet? Need to lose a few pounds?
At the request of many friends and readers, today I'm slapping together details of the "Karl Moore diet plan" I've been following the past couple of months.
Now, I'm going to tell you something. This plan works.
It involves a few changes to your eating habits... a little moderate exercise... and one *really fun* day every week...
But it has not only reduced my high blood pressure back down to normal rates, it's also taken me from a 34" waist right down to a very slim 30".
Goodbye belly.
A number of individuals have asked how it works - so in the spirit of my friend, Rebecca Marina, who always shares her great dieting tips with readers - here are my 10 simple rules.
The Karl Moore Diet:
Rule 1: Absolutely NO bread, potatoes, paste, rice or wraps.
Rule 2: Don't be stupid. Cut out "bad" foods like chocolate and crisps.
Rule 3: Enjoy SIMPLE meals. Fish, vegetables, some light meats. Typical dishes for me: smoked salmon with dill sauce... a simple kitchen salad... grilled chicken breast...
Rule 4: Allow yourself unlimited mushy peas! Low in fat, low in energy density, high in fibre and protein, these are the secret to a great diet. Mix with a tablespoon of mint sauce for flavour. One tin constitutes a meal.
Rule 5: Eat so that hunger is removed, but NOT so that you feel full. (This, incidentally, is the secret to living beyond 100!) Get out of the emotion and habitual cravings for food we all have. This is CRITICAL! Are you REALLY hungry? Make sure first!
Rule 6: Do not limit yourself on "special foods." For example, I don't limit the amount of salad cream I put on salads... or the amount of alcohol I drink. I am NOT a traditional calorie counter!
Rule 7: DRINK lots of water. Especially sugar-free flavoured water.
Rule 8: Take MULTI-VITAMINS every single day, to ensure you get enough of everything. I usually take a couple just to make sure.
Rule 9: Start WALKING MORE. And make it consistent. I currently walk for 40 to 60 minutes every single day. That's 3-4 miles. Find a nice route (I live in the city and walk out to the countryside), get an iPod, breathe deeply with every few steps - and just do it. Every day. STICK to it!
Rule 10: ONCE A WEEK... SPLURGE OUT! Purposefully OVERLOAD on calories to ensure that your metabolism doesn't slow down and your body "get used" to less food. Every Saturday, I overload on Snickers, chip butties, chocolate, and all the things I do NOT eat during the week. Including bread and everything else. It makes a GREAT CHANGE... and helps you lose even MORE weight! (Splurging is actually quite hard as first. Forget the guilt - and lap it up!)
* * *
Now, remember - I'm not a physician, so consult your doctor before undertaking any new diet regime.
However it works for me - and I've seen dramatic results - without feeling that I've "suffered" or felt hungry at any point.
I'd be interested in feedback from any nutritionists that may be reading.
But give it a go - and I look forward to hearing your success stories! :)

P.S. I have been "doing" essentially your suggested eating plan for four weeks and have lost 20 pounds. Am working towards losing 70 pounds. I was genuinely surprised when I "cheated" on the eating plan about one day a week and still lost the pounds!

Hi, Karl,
Love your diet plan! I pretty much do the same thing, except that I count calories and try to stay low on calories for Saturday through Thursday. My "everything day" is on Friday, where I do like you and eat anything and everything I've been denying myself all week. If I know I can eat ice cream, candy, chocolate, a big fat pastry for breakfast, whatever, on Friday, it's actually easy to not do it the rest of the week.
For me, I cut out butter and salad dressing and mayo almost two years ago, because those for me are calories that I don't miss. I much prefer salad with just lemon juice or balsamic vinegar on it anyway. I do eat occasional bread without butter, but it's not something I'm addictive with, so it's not a problem.
I've lost about 18 pounds over the last year and a half eating this way and feel fabulous!! This is the way I used to eat when I was in my 20s to stay slim and small, and I just don't buy the reasoning of getting older puts weight on.......NOT! I've counted calories for so long that I pretty much know the calorie counts of just about everything, so that's not a problem.
So we're on the same page, with a little tweaking for individuality. My cholesterol is high, which is part of why I cut out butter and mayo and salad dressings, but my blood pressure is always perfect (like about 108 over 65 or something along those lines).
Doctors have been trying to put me on cholesterol medication for years, and I go NO !!! And now he's trying to get me on hormones too, and I go NO also! I also do about 10 vitamins a day, and I feel wonderful and never get sick. I think if we listen to our bodies, they tell us what we need to do. I stay away from processed foods and eat as natural and as raw as I can, but I do eat chicken, pork, and fish, hardly ever any beef, as it makes me feel icky afterwards.
Congrats on your slim tummy and fabulous health plan!!
Hugs, my dear,
Sally

Good morning, Karlos,
Thank YOU for your great post! I've mentioned my diet plan to some friends, most of them around my age, and most of them respond that for them, they have to not eat sugar AT ALL if they're going to "diet," that they can't go off for one day a week, because they can't get back on it. For me, it works just the way it works for you; that one day a week is invaluable to my free spirit! I'm just too rebellious to stick with a super depriving eating plan all the time.
And I've done many different plans over the years (I could write a book about it actually.......lol), and this is the one that works for me, actually works to lose weight and keep it off and feel fabulous and energetic and look good and keep my soul fed as well. I like to be thin and I like the look of thin.
I've mentioned my eating method also to several different young women, darling young women actually, (in passing, when I'm ordering a pastry at a Starbucks that I don't usually go to, or something like that, people that I don't know), and the young, fit girls usually all say the same thing, "Oh, I do the same thing! One day a week is a free day where I can eat whatever I want!" So that's nice confirmation for me and for you too that we're on the right track.
I figure that as long as I, or anyone, eats right six days a week, that one day a week of eating everything I want isn't going to hurt my health. It's not the one day of unhealthy eating that makes us unhealthy; it's the day after day of it that is the villian.
So hang in there, baby!! You're doing wonderfully, and your posts are very inspiring and enjoyable. Have a fabulous day!!
Love to you too,
Sally

Hey Karl Moore :-)
Great song!
Good idea for a diet... you lost 4 inches... awesome!
I've been on a similar diet and slimmed down 10 pounds, it does work. Your 'anything goes' day is Saturday, mine is Sunday. I like the idea of Saturday better. Would give me a chance to 'recover' on Sunday which would give me more energy for work on Monday.
Anyhoos, hope you have a great day.
Love-n-hugs... Carol :-)

hey Karl,
I am NOT a nutritionist but almost with my fickle clients.. ;-)).... I am a personal trainer so I am eternally encouraging and evaluating.... all your tips are good, as far as I can tell EXCEPT flavoured waters. I will assume they are flavoured with a toxic, chemical artificial sweetener which tricks your cells and taste buds...but the liver knows. For some individuals, artificial sweeteners mimic the symptoms of neurological disorders and can cause MUCH damage. The experts may claim they're safe but there have been countless stories of damage... mercola.com has plenty of articles to testify to that... :-))
sincerely,
Chia

Hey there Karlos,
I'm inspired by your 10 step diet. I've been procrastinating about making a change to a healthier lifestyle. Not sure why, I know intellectually it would be much better for me, just a terrible habit that I have... procrastination. I like your suggestions in this email and would like to follow it. I just have one question. Do you have a recipe for mushy peas? I have only had them once. I'm from Canada, and went to visit some relatives in Vancouver a few years back. There is this English fish and chip place they like going to... we went there and that is the only time I have ever had mushy peas. I loved them! Not sure why it hasn't caught on here in Canada. Anyways, I'd appreciate it if you would be able to help me out by explaining how I can make mushy peas. Thanks.
Much love,
Vicky

Sounds great, but I have no idea what a tin of mushy peas would be.

I don't want all my posts to this blog to be negative, but explain your philosophy on sugar free flavoured water if you can.
I was wondering why you would consider this to be more beneficial than ordinary water, especially as it contains Aspartame which is a toxic chemical linked to cancer and other serious health problems.
