Detox Your Life

How cluttered is your life?

Do you often feel as though you're drowning in all the complexities of your daily routine?

Perhaps you're ready to clear out the junk ... and I don't just mean all the excesses in your living space (though it's good to have a clear out there too!) ... but also the mental junk that you carry around with you.

American poet Henry David Thoreau said...

'Life is frittered away by detail. Simplify; simplify!'

How true!

You see, we don't need all the clutter ... whether that's unresolved emotional baggage or unnecessary daily routines that take up all our time and energy.

We can let go!

Start by de-cluttering your living and work space.

Clear out your wardrobes and cupboards. Donate clothes, accessories, books and bric-a-brac to charity. Recycle all those old magazines and newspapers. Tidy up your work space by filing everything away.

Once you have a tidy space, the "energy" in that space improves.

Now, do the same with your daily routines. Look at everything that you do in a day. Is everything completely necessary?

Let go of redundant or superfluous habits.

Delete everything that is "obligation." Think through your daily routine - what are you doing that you don't enjoy? Simplify your life and notice how much more time you have free as a result!

Once you've done this, consider how you can de-clutter your mind.

Clear out all those unwanted, negative thoughts. Let go of those emotions that have drained you of vital energy. Allow your mind to be still by meditating each day and notice how much clarity you gain from quietening your thoughts.

Remember ... time is the only true currency ... so simplify your life and claim more of it.

Make sure you use your time wisely by doing what makes you happy.

Enjoy the simple bliss of this moment!

  • I've been listening to your radio station for several months now and enjoying it a lot. Today I decided to go to your blog and see what you had to say, as everytime you advertised your own Interview it would switch to another programme set.
So I have read your Blog and find it matches the man I hear on the radio. An interesting man with a lot of depth.
On this issue, I have been moving a lot since I seperated from my husband 10 years ago. Each move meant the decluttering process you talk about. I see it as removing dead layers of skin, like a snake.
I now live in Yorkshire (I'm an Aussie) in a one bedroom croft with very few 'things'. Its incredibly freeing.
For many people Things are Soulful. (One of my favourite authors is Thomas Moore 'Healing the Soul'). They connect us to the past- and the Soul needs that connection.
But its all about balance. If you allow too much of the Past to take up our Present space, there is no room for the Future.
So these days I keep little momentoes of the Past for my Soul and leave plenty of space for my Present and Future.
Keep up the good work with the radio station. I love listening to inspirational speakers!
I don't know how to do the links to my own Blog (yet)but my site is www.thejourneywoman.info/ if you'd like to reply.

  • Karl,

finally managed to get to the comment page !! Thanks !

I chose my 'display' name for a reason and I have used it in some other places too.

You see, I believe, this clinging onto the past is a result of seein into an uncertain future. Let me explain.
If none of us had any issues about whats going to happen in the future, what we store in memory to prepare for the future would not arise. Clinging onto the past is good when the past is good. Else it results into a myriad of problems as you rightly mention.

I have some more things I want to pen (type), but need to finish some work so will be back again soon.

    Let me know your thoughts.

  • Karl, this post really speaks to me. I've been on a mission to do this for awhile now, but I seem to do very minuscule things and then get sidetracked. The other two comments on here gave me some insight into this as well. This was my mission for 2008, but I didn't get much done. I'm making it my mission again for this year, 2009, with even more determination to get to the bottom of my clutter, physically and mentally too. Thanks!
