We Don't Need a Crowded Ballroom

Well - it's New Year's Eve.

And as another year draws to a close, it never fails to surprise me just how many people genuinely dislike this time of year.

They're glum. Disappointed with life. Wanting to tuck into bed by 11.45pm.

Yet it should be a time for celebrating.

We've survived another 365 days on this roller coaster of a journey we call life.

Think about it. What did you do this year?

Fall in love? Expand your business? Grow old gracefully? Rocket your social circle? Create your own blog?

None of the above? All of the above?

This may have been a "bad" year for you. Or it may have been a "good" year.

But the one thing I always draw from December 31st... the one thing that always leaves me looking forward to the coming year...

... Is that distinctly human quality: hope.

Hope that things will get better. Hope that we'll improve. Hope for happy moments and increased knowledge.

Hope for change.

For me, at least, that's what makes this time of year special. The knowledge that change is upon us - and that it's a great time to start afresh.

Diarist James Agate said: "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."

What would YOU like to change in your life over the coming 12 months?

HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

  • I am hoping 2009 is better! 2008 wasn't a stellar year for me and I think I've hit bottom so all there is to do is go up, eh?

  • 2008 wasn't exactly a great year for me. But I am very hopeful for 2009 because I finally get to go back to school.

  • I've been thinking about this concept of hope. It's a great idea I think, however something just doesn't sit right with me about hope. I think maybe it's the way it can be used... as if there is something so terrible in our lives that we need to turn to hope. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but what does it mean when we have to "hope" for a better future? Why can't we just make it better rather than hoping something good will happen in our lives? I think that's it... hope to me, is a good excuse to not take responsibility in one's life and just wait for the next best thing to happen to us. I only say this because it's what I used to do. Wait/hope for something good to happen to me. Didn't really help me much though.
