We Don't Need a Crowded Ballroom

Well - it's New Year's Eve.

And as another year draws to a close, it never fails to surprise me just how many people genuinely dislike this time of year.

They're glum. Disappointed with life. Wanting to tuck into bed by 11.45pm.

Yet it should be a time for celebrating.

We've survived another 365 days on this roller coaster of a journey we call life.

Think about it. What did you do this year?

Fall in love? Expand your business? Grow old gracefully? Rocket your social circle? Create your own blog?

None of the above? All of the above?

This may have been a "bad" year for you. Or it may have been a "good" year.

But the one thing I always draw from December 31st... the one thing that always leaves me looking forward to the coming year...

... Is that distinctly human quality: hope.

Hope that things will get better. Hope that we'll improve. Hope for happy moments and increased knowledge.

Hope for change.

For me, at least, that's what makes this time of year special. The knowledge that change is upon us - and that it's a great time to start afresh.

Diarist James Agate said: "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."

What would YOU like to change in your life over the coming 12 months?

HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

Play, Today

I've just returned from a wonderful holiday in Thailand.

It's my first proper holiday for about two years and, boy, was I ready for some extended time and space to simply relax and have fun.

While I was out there exploring the beautiful landscape, I started to think about how easy it is to live each day with spontaneity when you're a child. In fact, for most children, play time and adventure are second nature ... having fun is what life's all about.

Then we start to grow older.

It's only when we take on adult responsibilities ...the serious stuff such as career, job, mortgage, relationships and so on ... that we risk losing touch with what it means to play.

As adults, we're expected to grow-up ... act our age ... take life seriously.

If we're not careful, we can forget what it means to have fun.

But being able to play ... using our natural tendency to be creative, be spontaneous, explore, whoop it up, and enjoy ... is one of the greatest gifts of life.

Play time isn't just for kids.

There's nothing in the 'rule book' to say it is.

It really doesn't matter whether you're eight or eighty ... making time to play is absolutely essential for well-being.

I make a point of including play time into my life as much as possible ... and I don't wait for a holiday to come round to do so.

What does it matter if I jump up and down and run around crazily just for the sheer joy of it?

Who cares if I take a few hours out to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of adventure?

Every day should include some play time ... a chance to reconnect with the child within ... to have fun and be frivolous and spontaneous.

Play time makes you feel vibrant ... diminishes the stresses in life ... and provides a tangible sense of well-being.

So give it a try!

Take some time out today and play! It'll make the world of difference!

Over and Over and Over Again!

Catchy new Christmas songs seem a rarity these days.

But our Geraldine McQueen has managed to come up with a real festive cracker.

What Do You Think Of It So Far?

I absolutely love life!

I embrace every moment ... every experience ... and look for ways of sharing that joy at every opportunity.

Life doesn't always go to plan though. I have my off-days just like anyone else.

C'est la vie!

And it's all the more reason to smile, laugh and enjoy creating fun-filled moments.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said:

'Make the most of yourself – for that is all there is of you'.

Can't argue with that!

After all, our thoughts make up our reality.

To a greater extent, we choose the experiences that make up our lives by choosing how we react to everything that comes our way.

So, if we think life is cruel and unkind, then it is.

If we think life is great and full of opportunity, it is.

Our thoughts create our experiences.

So, what do you think of life so far?

Is it working out as you'd like?

If not, what can you do to change it?

Life really is what you make it. And like Emerson said:

Make the most of yourself!

Do You Dare to Begin?

When faced with a challenge or some great project that you know you have to achieve, do you find yourself procrastinating?

Do you look for ways to avoid facing the challenge because it all seems far too much?

If so, don't worry. I know what it's like.

And I've also come to know that by 'putting off until tomorrow what you can do today' is only delaying the inevitable. Which is why, when faced with a challenge or a big project that I need to undertake, I take a deep breath and just do it!

German writer Goethe said:

'Whatever you do, or dream you can do, begin it – boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now!'

Once you've taken that first step, you know that you're moving forward ... you're taking positive action ... and you're closer to achieving the desired result.

Whether it's starting the book you want to write, or commencing a trek across the Himalayas or changing your diet so that you can lose some excess weight and improve your health, as soon as you begin, you're on your way to realizing your goal.

So, do what I do.

Take a deep breath ... focus on what you have to do ... and go to it.

Life is so precious. When you idly lose a minute here and there through procrastination, fear or laziness, you don't get that time back. It's gone forever.

So don't lose your precious time.

Take a deep breath and begin what you have to do RIGHT NOW!

And once you've started, you'll probably be asking yourself what the fuss was all about! You see, the mind can conjure up all kinds of images of problems ahead when really a challenge is never as difficult or as fearsome as you think.

So, I'll ask again ... Do you dare to begin?

Make your answer - 'Absolutely!'

YES, YES, YES!

Have a wonderful day of action!

The Power of Subliminals

I must admit that when it comes to self-development, I prefer a scientific approach.

It's just my style.

Give me brainwave charts and feedback forms, vs therapy groups and herbal remedies.

One thing that you should know is that I really believe in the power behind subliminal messages.

I've seem them work with startling results!

Subliminal messages are little positive affirmations that are delivered "below the threshold of consciousness."

So they may be flash quickly on a computer screen, or spoken softly - or in reverse - in an audio recording.

It happens in a way that the conscious mind can't pick it up. But the subconscious does. It takes it as a direct command - and changes the way it operates as a result.

So a subliminal affirmation of "I am confident" - will help you become more confident.

Subliminal messages are powerful. No doubt about it.

That's why today I'd like to tell you about Subliminal Power.

Now, I helped to develop the first version of Subliminal Power. It's now installed on around one million computers worldwide. It's fans include Olympic athlete winners and gurus such as Joe Vitale.

Subliminal Power installs onto your PC and flashes messages around your computer screen as you work.

It turns every minute you're using your computer into a practical self-development workshop.

It's easy to use and completely unobtrusive. It also comes with a full 28-day risk-free guarantee. Try it out, see if it works - get a refund if you're not 100% thrilled.

Interested?

I invite you to discover the official website, online at:

http://www.subliminal-power.com/

(If you own a Mac, you can try out the cross-platform Brain Bullet, which effectively does the same thing.)

Check it out. I promise you'll love it.

Frick It!

Recently, I've spent much time studying the science of happiness.

What makes us happy. Why we strive for happiness. What, indeed, is happiness.

One theory proposed by scientists is that we each have a default "happiness level" - which we ultimately revert back to, despite the multitude of peaks and troughs we experience around it.

I'm not so sure about that.

But I do think we each have a relatively "default" level of stress and anxiety.

You know what I mean. Some of us deal with the most stressful situations each and every day - and hardly break a sweat. Others lose a pen and it's Panic Central.

I personally cope with quite a substantial amount of stress on a daily basis, with not too much fuss. But I am still a worrier - obsessed with details and the unknown.

I call this default setting our "Worry Space."

(Learn more about this concept by clicking here.)

But here's my own personal theory...

With vigilant practice, we can reduce the size of our Worry Space - so we're no longer a slave to fear and anxiety.

How?

By simply forcing it out of our minds when worry sets itself upon us.

By telling ourselves: "Is this really that important?"

I mean - is it going to kill you if you don't worry about it?

Get into perspective, then stop worrying and move onto something else. If you find your mind returning back to it, force yourself onto something else.

Say "FRICK IT!!"

(Yes, "Frick it!" is the Western equivalent of the Eastern concept of letting go of attachments - a wonderful comparison made in a book of a similar title.)

STOP WORRYING.

Tell your worries to go take a hike, and do not give in or entertain them. Simply... ignore them.

There's a great quote in Peep Show, where Jeremy says: "People talk about running away from your problems as if it's a bad thing. But if they never catch up with you - what's the issue?"

Worries are usually self-created and rarely realized.

So "run away" from them - ignore them, frick them - and they'll never catch up.

And, ultimately, your own Worry Space shrinks away - until it's near invisible.

Try it for a week. See for yourself. Say frick it to worries, and see what happens. You might just surprise yourself.

Detox Your Life

How cluttered is your life?

Do you often feel as though you're drowning in all the complexities of your daily routine?

Perhaps you're ready to clear out the junk ... and I don't just mean all the excesses in your living space (though it's good to have a clear out there too!) ... but also the mental junk that you carry around with you.

American poet Henry David Thoreau said...

'Life is frittered away by detail. Simplify; simplify!'

How true!

You see, we don't need all the clutter ... whether that's unresolved emotional baggage or unnecessary daily routines that take up all our time and energy.

We can let go!

Start by de-cluttering your living and work space.

Clear out your wardrobes and cupboards. Donate clothes, accessories, books and bric-a-brac to charity. Recycle all those old magazines and newspapers. Tidy up your work space by filing everything away.

Once you have a tidy space, the "energy" in that space improves.

Now, do the same with your daily routines. Look at everything that you do in a day. Is everything completely necessary?

Let go of redundant or superfluous habits.

Delete everything that is "obligation." Think through your daily routine - what are you doing that you don't enjoy? Simplify your life and notice how much more time you have free as a result!

Once you've done this, consider how you can de-clutter your mind.

Clear out all those unwanted, negative thoughts. Let go of those emotions that have drained you of vital energy. Allow your mind to be still by meditating each day and notice how much clarity you gain from quietening your thoughts.

Remember ... time is the only true currency ... so simplify your life and claim more of it.

Make sure you use your time wisely by doing what makes you happy.

Enjoy the simple bliss of this moment!

Never Put Off to Tomorrow

Today, I really did NOT want to work.

I had three hours sleep last night and had a pile of "those jobs" to do which I don't particularly like doing.

Still, I just pushed through and completed all those tasks. Now they're done and I'm free to enjoy the rest of my day.

I could have taken another option ... I could have pushed the work aside and left it all until tomorrow.

But for a little procrastination, I would have had the worry and angst of not completing the day's jobs. What's more, those jobs would still be there to do the next day.

When things aren't going right or you're faced with a task that you'd rather not do, it seems easier to hide or put off the inevitable than face the problems.

Taking timely action, however, can bring about a successful and speedy resolution.

You just do what you have to do ... remedy any problems, complete those loathsome tasks ... then your mind is free.

So, if you have any niggling, outstanding issues or tasks that really need your attention, commit to resolving them today.

You'll feel so much better when you have taken action.

Remember the old English proverb ...

'Never put off to tomorrow what you can do today.'

Procrastination really is the thief of time ... your time ... those vital moments of your life that pass and never return.

So, do what you need to do...

And enjoy feeling the satisfaction of checking off another chore.
