Evolution vs Religion - Video Post

Where did the idea of a God come from?

In a follow-on to my last video post, today I'm continuing to discuss evolution and religion - and how God is a natural product of human thinking.

But... Is a God-less world a better world?

And are you sure he doesn't exist...? How else can you explain the complex human eye? Who created the universe? What happens when you die?

All of these questions - and more - answered in today's video post:

  • I have so much enjoyed your last 3 video posts, it's a subject we all reason with and i believe your explanation really does sum it up.

  • Dear Karl, You are alovely guy and have such an appreciation of what is good and beautiful you are almost a Christian!I think you have only received a characterture of God so God is not getting a fair deal in your mind. Can you imagine the most lovely being ever whose nature is love and have any objection to knowing Him?So the eye deteriorates with age and is not perfect; isn't that also evidence of the fall of a perfect world that will oneday be perfect again. I would say most of the evidence points to a world in pain and decay not evolution. The world is amazing and so wonderfully intricate. I prefer to think of it starting like that instead of enduring millions of years of death ,decay , and survival of the fittest; what is lovely about that! How can you be searching for truth , how can such a thing exist without a law-giver. Jesua said that he was the way the truth and the life- a risky thing to say unless one was mad! I bless you on your journey to truth , keep an open mind ,it is a wonderful world.Rose

  • Very well said!
I know how religion divides because my whole family is Catholic and I broke away from that to be more Naturalistic/evolutionist and my family has been at 'war' with me ever since. They wont even talk to me if I bring up religion. The worst issue was that I could not be a Maid of Honor at my sister's wedding because of not being Catholic anymore. It is ridiculous.
    Thank you for your views.

PS- my eyes are horrible (almost legally blind) and I am only 38..so yes, 'god' needs to go back to the drawing board! LMAO!
    THANK YOU!

  • Thank you all for your wonderful comments. @Lynnsdecor: you did make me laugh :)

Rose, I'm "more" than Christian when it comes to appreciating the beauty of the world -- and I hope the years I've worked on this blog provide (for want of a better word) testament to that.

Imagining the "most beautiful being" is unfortunately just that... imaginary.

It's a real shame that as adults we conjure up and cling on to the super-human fantasies that we dare not let go off.

We'd prefer to think that someone is looking after us up there. But... they're not.

It's a challenging thought, but better to be wise or ignorant?

    Your call.

  • Hello,

OMG, I just had to give you a testimonial. In Oct 2008 my house was set on fire and lost everything, including access to my SBCGlobal.net e-mail because I no longer was using their service. All I could think about was all the wonderful Meditation and Self-Improvement Tools that I had downloaded off your website and I couldn't remember after 6 mos. where and how I had got to your site. Well, what are the chances that almost exactly one year everything that I lost has practically been restored with even better stuff. That is just how the Universe works, but I still didn't remember where I got the website and the free gifts. Three weeks I got my new computer, nicer and faster and I all I could was focus on your gifts, but I didn't have a clue about this site as I mentioned. Well, in a round about way that started with me going back to KarlBlog's website I wound up back at your site with all the joy and excitement of a child at Christmas, thanking God for the small favors (which are really huge to me ;0), but nothing for Him!) I believed that I literally manifested this site by seeing the motivation quotes pop-up even though they weren't really there and longed in inner soul to have them back. Now they are. Thank you and is it okay for me use this link on my website for my clients? If not, please tell me which one to use.

  • While I do believe that we are all actually extensions of God & made up of the same energy, it is also my belief that everyone is partly right and everyone is partly wrong - all religions and even what Karl said regarding evolution. I think everyone is holding a piece to a giant puzzle. We are all trying to convince each other that our way of thinking is the right way, the only way, when one day we may find that when you put all of us: all of our puzzle pieces together we will make up the real picture and realize that we were all right, but not until we were all united. And I believe that brings us back to the point that Karl was making; a united world would be a happier place.

    Thanks,
    Cassie

  • Dearest Karl, You are such a beautiful person. Though I do not agree with your full belief system, I agree with you on what I refer to as "the R word". Religion does divide. I haven't researched deep enough to know what the purpose of religion actually is and wouldn't want to. I consider myself to be a follower of Christ. That isn't going to change but to judge someone else, that simply isn't my place. I believe perhaps because I've been so deeply hurt by churches and so called "Christians", that some would not see me as a "Christian" as the world believes "Christians" to be. My grandmother taught that to be a Christian is to believe in one true God {which I do} and be a follower of Christ {which I am}. The "Christians" I've come across seem so hung up on religion that they do not know how to be descent human beings anymore. When did the world become so self involved that even "Christians" do not reach out to help those in need? I personally do not believe we need a God-less world, as you and I believe differently. However, to have a Religion-less world would probably be delightful. Blessings to you ~ Lis

  • Hi Karl,

Very interesting and controversial videos indeed! While I do believe in God, I don't think of God as most religions would want us to. Having said that, I believe we are ALL God, in a sense that we are all part of the creation of the universe, which is all energy just as we are... which by the way, goes hand in hand with one of the questions...

What happens after we die? - According to my beliefs and opinion, since we are energy, we'll just transcend and transform into something else, like another life which, in terms of religion, would be considered as reincarnation (a whole different subject for discussion indeed).

In regard to your last statement... getting united as the human race, I 100% support your comment; however, I think we don't need not to believe in God to achieve that. We just need to learn to be more tolerant and respectful towards each other. Only then there will be peace on Earth... something this world has been craving for a long time.

    Thanks for sharing your insights!

  • We are here as a result of others wanting to satisfy desires, and/or instincts and/or conforming to expectations. Or it could be an accident.

Whatever the cause, we are here now. Some people manage to find solace in religion. I have found that the best approach is to make a reasonable contribution to the society which supports you, then involve yourself in activities which you find pleasureable, interesting, or exciting.

Perform an exercise in "running back the clock", all the way from before you were born, through the emergence of proto-hominins in the giant Rift valley of Eastern Africa, through mud skipper like fish surviving attacks from predators by moving into increasingly shallower water on tidal flats, to the evolution of multicellularity, and ultimately to the first self replicating molecules which were capable of (poorly) reproducing themselves, leading to natural selection.

Then go a stage further, to the formation of the very unusual Earth/Moon dyad, the coalescence of clouds of gas and dust from 4 supernovae which occurred more than 5 billion years ago, leading eventually to the singularity (so called "big bang" - which was neither big, nor was there a bang, because there was no matter, or sound) around 12.5 billion years ago.

You may care to reverse the order, incorporating many of history's, and pre-history's turning points, and how such minor events as a grain of cosmic dust either impacting, or not impacting a meteoroid, hundreds of millions of miles away, more than 60 million years ago, at the KT boundary event cleared the ecological niches formerly occupied by dinosaurs, enabling tiny mammals to evolve into much larger forms.

The very nature of the universe in which we find ourselves appears to be within a very narrow range of parameters necessary for the possibility of life, (the anthropic principle) not to mention the "goldilocks orbit" of the Earth/Moon, in a stable part of a highly metalliferous spiral galaxy, with a massive planet like Jupiter, protecting us from frequent bombardment of comets, and meteoroids, causing mass extinctions.

The next stage is quantum probability theory, (the computer you are viewing this on works by virtue of the electron tunnelling effect, which is a quantum physics phenomenon) and the likelihood of this being just one of infinite trillions of probability worlds, each based on the collapse of the wave function in any given probability event, such as the decay of any radioactive particle at any specified time. So, what of the other versions of "you", each one slightly different, in at least a slightly different universe? Food for thought! Life has no inherent meaning. Purpose is restricted to higher animals, with the ability to form plans. To gain a deeper understanding of life, it is necessary to know how you, and everyone, and everything else got here; to "run back the clock", all the way to to the singularity, approximately 12 .5 billion years ago. Early tribes had shamans, and the first civilisations; priests, eventually evolving into organised religion.
