Persistence is More Important than Talent

Think about it.

When you're younger there's a notion that if you're talented - at writing, art, sport, music, drama, whatever - you are going to be the next highly successful person.

But in reality this just doesn't always bear out. Talent is not enough.

The world is littered with extremely talented people who just didn't persist or put in the time. Talent alone doesn't get you there. You need to put in the hard slog too.

Persistence is the ability to maintain action regardless of your feelings.

You press on even when you feel like quitting.

When you work on any big goal, sometimes you'll feel motivated; sometimes you won't. But it's not your motivation that will produce results - it's your action.

Persistence allows you to keep taking action even when you don't feel motivated to do so, and therefore you keep moving forward towards your goal.

Persistence will ultimately provide its own motivation. If you simply keep taking action, you'll eventually get results, and results can be very motivating.

For example, you decide to write a novel and struggle with the first three chapters, but than you feel the story is taking a life of its own and is starting to flow on the page. It's then you become a lot more enthusiastic about writing the rest of the novel.

Are you putting enough work into your endeavors, or are you just dreaming of the golden times ahead?

Don't be a dreamer, be a doer!

Now go out there and keep on knocking on those doors of opportunity!

  • Karl~
Hello, and thanks for writing this blog.
Persistence does get us more success than talent because talent, more often than not, keeps us focused on it,rather than the action steps needed to succeed.
I had a problem trying to post a comment here today.
Although I am not computer illiterate, my persistence helped more than my tech knowledge.
    Thanks again~
