On Variety

Variety is the spice of life and life is all about experience.

When you are focused on doing something new or different, you feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

It's easy to fall into the rut of routine. And you know when you're there, as life becomes lack-lustre.

So, commit to doing something new this week.

You might just surprise yourself!

Why Does Life Get Faster?

As we get older, life seems to get faster.

But why? And how can we slow it down?

I've just returned from a meal with my good friend, Geoffrey Gregg - during which we discussed that very topic.

In this video post, I take a quick five minutes out to discuss our conclusions with you:

This Too, Will Pass!

If life isn't going your way at the moment, be comforted by the mantra - `This, too, will pass!'

In fact, say it out loud. `This, too, will pass!'

You see, everything in life is transient. Every situation is fleeting and nothing remains the same.

So, if you're having the worst day ever, say: This, too, will pass.

If you're sad because you've fallen out with a loved one, say: This, too, will pass.

If you're feeling low and can't imagine how life will improve, say and believe: This, too, will pass.

When you become aware of life's fleeting moments and your emotional response to those moments, you're able to stand back and detach. It doesn't mean that you don't care. On the contrary!

Actually, it means you're awakening to life's transience and realize that you can move on from any sadness or suffering.

So, if someone shouts at you today or makes you feel miserable, just remember that this, too, will pass.

Life changes moment-by-moment.

Happy times are never far away!

I Need Your Help!

Bit of a different post, today. You see...

I need your help!

Rather than my usual dollop of inspiration, today I'd like to throw out a few questions - to see if any of my wonderful subscribers can help.

First question:

I'd like to move to Manchester, in the United Kingdom, shortly. I don't want to move directly into the centre, but a short taxi drive away.

Preferably a local district. Think: chic apartments, friendly community, and good stores within walking distance.

Second question:

I'm looking for my ideal life-partner.

Preferably someone exotic, living in England...

Actually, I'll save that one for another time ;)

In Praise of Miss Potter

Are we born to greatness?

Or do we achieve greatness through sheer hard work and determination?

When you look at the works and achievements of some of our greatest scientists, artists and writers, you can't help but ponder.

I tend to believe that we all have gifts and it's what we do with these gifts that will determine our potential for greatness.

People can achieve greatness and become cherished for the pleasure that their work gives and for the fact that what they give is from the heart.

In my opinion, Beatrix Potter is one such person.

For those of you not familiar with Miss Potter (which is also the title of the film starring Renne Zellweger), she became a best-selling children's author with her beautifully illustrated tales based on her animal friends.

Through the early 1900s, Beatrix Potter wrote 23 books. Some of the most popular include The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin.

Though brought up comfortably in a middle class family, Beatrix had little social contact with other children and often disappeared into a world of her own creating animal stories. She had a strong interest for natural history and the land, and spent hours drawing wildlife.

Fiercely independent, Beatrix shunned her parents' plans for her marriage and decided that she would make her own living writing books. Something that was unheard of at the time because of her gender. She did fall in love though but the man she hoped to spend her life with tragically died following a brief illness.

Heartbroken, Beatrix moved to the Lake District. There, she purchased Hill Top Farm in Sawry where she lived for the rest of her life, devoting her time to wildlife and conservation of Lakeland farms. From the proceeds of her books, she was able to buy and save many working farms. Finally, when she died, she left over 4000 acres to the National Trust, a legacy which helped ensure the future of the Lake District.

I'm sure you'll agree ... what an inspirational lady!

And her books still sell by the thousands to this day!

An Impossible Situation

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain.

He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter.

Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.

1) If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven.

2) If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.

3) If she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.

They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.

Now, imagine that you were standing in the field.

What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?

Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.

2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.

Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical answers.

What would you recommend to the girl to do?

Well, here is what she did ....

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.

'Oh, how clumsy of me,' she said. 'But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.'

Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.

The moral of the story?

Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don't attempt to think. Start your day with this thought provoking story and have a fruitful day.

Have a week filled with positive thoughts and sound decisions!

The Parable

A huge Canadian guy was given a job as a woodcutter.

He was so grateful for the opportunity to work, and support his wife and family, that he vowed to work as hard as he could, and fell as many trees as he could.

On the first day, he worked very hard, and managed to cut down 13 trees. He was delighted with himself, and also his boss was delighted. He vowed to do even better on the second day.

On the second day, he worked even harder than the previous day, and took a shorter lunch break.

By the end of the working day, he had only managed to cut down 11 trees.

He arrived for work even earlier on day three, and worked right through his lunch break. He worked as hard as he possibly could, and only managed to cut down 9 trees.

At the end of the day, he walked dejectedly into the boss's office, and offered to resign. He said that he could not explain his poor performance, given what he had achieved on day one.

The boss would not accept his resignation, and asked just one question of him.

"Tell me, when did you last sharpen your axe?"

There's No Place

Today, I return to my home city - after weeks of travelling.

I initially visited Frankfurt for filming of The Meta Secret, then to Orlando for meetings with industry experts such as Ed Dale and Dan Raine.

But you know something?

I'm tired, and I'll be thrilled to return home.

To cuddle my dog. To hug my family. To squeeze my quilt.

Freya Stark said: "To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world."

I disagree.

To awake in your own home, with your own routine, with your own comforts and friends surrounding - that is truly the most pleasant sensation.

Cesare Pavese put it more direct:

"Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it."

Yes, that exploration of the world is a beautiful thing.

But home?

There's truly no place like it.

And if you're not appreciating that today... maybe you should.

The 10-Step Karl Moore Diet!

Struggling with your diet? Need to lose a few pounds?

At the request of many friends and readers, today I'm slapping together details of the "Karl Moore diet plan" I've been following the past couple of months.

Now, I'm going to tell you something. This plan works.

It involves a few changes to your eating habits... a little moderate exercise... and one *really fun* day every week...

But it has not only reduced my high blood pressure back down to normal rates, it's also taken me from a 34" waist right down to a very slim 30".

Goodbye belly.

A number of individuals have asked how it works - so in the spirit of my friend, Rebecca Marina, who always shares her great dieting tips with readers - here are my 10 simple rules.

The Karl Moore Diet:

Rule 1: Absolutely NO bread, potatoes, paste, rice or wraps.

Rule 2: Don't be stupid. Cut out "bad" foods like chocolate and crisps.

Rule 3: Enjoy SIMPLE meals. Fish, vegetables, some light meats. Typical dishes for me: smoked salmon with dill sauce... a simple kitchen salad... grilled chicken breast...

Rule 4: Allow yourself unlimited mushy peas! Low in fat, low in energy density, high in fibre and protein, these are the secret to a great diet. Mix with a tablespoon of mint sauce for flavour. One tin constitutes a meal.

Rule 5: Eat so that hunger is removed, but NOT so that you feel full. (This, incidentally, is the secret to living beyond 100!) Get out of the emotion and habitual cravings for food we all have. This is CRITICAL! Are you REALLY hungry? Make sure first!

Rule 6: Do not limit yourself on "special foods." For example, I don't limit the amount of salad cream I put on salads... or the amount of alcohol I drink. I am NOT a traditional calorie counter!

Rule 7: DRINK lots of water. Especially sugar-free flavoured water.

Rule 8: Take MULTI-VITAMINS every single day, to ensure you get enough of everything. I usually take a couple just to make sure.

Rule 9: Start WALKING MORE. And make it consistent. I currently walk for 40 to 60 minutes every single day. That's 3-4 miles. Find a nice route (I live in the city and walk out to the countryside), get an iPod, breathe deeply with every few steps - and just do it. Every day. STICK to it!

Rule 10: ONCE A WEEK... SPLURGE OUT! Purposefully OVERLOAD on calories to ensure that your metabolism doesn't slow down and your body "get used" to less food. Every Saturday, I overload on Snickers, chip butties, chocolate, and all the things I do NOT eat during the week. Including bread and everything else. It makes a GREAT CHANGE... and helps you lose even MORE weight! (Splurging is actually quite hard as first. Forget the guilt - and lap it up!)

* * *

Now, remember - I'm not a physician, so consult your doctor before undertaking any new diet regime.

However it works for me - and I've seen dramatic results - without feeling that I've "suffered" or felt hungry at any point.

I'd be interested in feedback from any nutritionists that may be reading.

But give it a go - and I look forward to hearing your success stories! :)

Question: What Was That?

This evening, a quick personal question to my dearest blog readers.

I'm trying to remember the name of a certain expressive dance style, popular in the world of self-growth.

It's called something like the Five Dances, or the Four Movements.

But I just can't remember the name.

Can you?

What is it?

Just post a comment at www.karlblog.com to let me know, or reply if you're reading by e-mail.

Thank you! :)

How to Live to 101!

I don't know about you, but I plan to live until I'm 100.

So far, so good.

And that's one reason I really enjoyed reading this fantastic little article on the BBC's news site:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7250675.stm

It's all about how you can reach your own century, just by copying what other people in older-living regions do.

From residing in a more stable climate, to only eating until you're 80% full, it's a fascinating little article. You might just want to check it out. Same for the related Horizon feature:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/
horizon/broadband/tx/101/

And here's another nice little resource that I personally helped edit a few weeks ago:

http://www.fiverituals.com/

The Five Rituals are a series of ancient exercises that can supposedly knock 30 years off your look -- in just 10 minutes a day.

Check them out. And stay young!

Happy Thursday! :)

You Are the Only Constant

In my last post, "The Teaching of an Atheist," I discussed the idea that...

... Maybe, just maybe, there was no such thing as God.

And wow! What a response I received.

This morning alone, a dozen messages have popped into my Inbox -- expressing many mixed views.

Now, just to recap: if you read the post, you'll realize that my intention was to ask ourselves whether there could be real meaning behind our lives, even if there was no God?

It was supposed to be inspiring to all, atheist or otherwise.

My conclusion was that the meaning of life... is the meaning you bring to life.

And that's a conclusion outside of the realms of whether God exists or not.

But wow... What an interesting series of responses I received on the subject!

I was called an aethiest. An insulter of humanity. Told I should be ashamed of myself. Informed that I was a confused being. And numerous unsubscribe requests.

And guess what?

I'm pleased.

Because I rattled a few cages.

I questioned something that was at the very foundation of many individuals: A religious belief system.

And, in some, it was a belief system so weak it caused a riotous reaction, the moment I asked you to consider the alternative.

Now, I don't know about you -- but I find that incredibly interesting.

Of course, as it happens, I am a believer in "my version" of God. All of my regular readers know that. Heck, one of my favourite phrases is "Let Go and Let God." I even have a God section.

But I'm still open to seeing the other side of the coin.

How about you?

Is your belief system so critical and important that you can't BEAR for it to be questioned?

Does that sound like the quality of a truly spiritually-developed individual to you?

Or are you open to fresh ideas... and just happy and stable in the freedom that is inherently YOU already?

Some people bury themselves in spirituality or religion - and scream at those that dare rock the foundations of their castle.

Well, I don't wish to rock any castles.

But I do invite you to begin enjoying the freedom that you always are.

Try this if you're unsure how: http://www.karlblog.com/blog/2007/06/quietening-mind.html

Using the technique of asking yourself "Is this a limiting thought?" - you can slowly release any desperate clutch you may have on a belief system, and begin enjoy freedom again.

You are the only constant in your world.

The rest is a limiting thought.

Of course, I'm not saying to let go of your belief system. Certainly not. Just be aware that it is ultimately a limiting belief (which, yes, may serve a wonderful purpose) - smile, and move on.

Could God really define himself in words, anyway? Drop the words, the "limiting beliefs," appreciate the world around you, and move on.

And then smile.

Because life is wonderful :)

PS. Clarification

Just FYI, here's a quick message I responded to a little earlier -- copied here for clarity.

Not everyone is happy to have their steadfast beliefs questioned.

Are you?

Also, thank you very much to the lady that sent the below message, as it allowed me time to respond -- and perhaps clear up a point that others have questioned.

My message was intended to be one of inspiration and hope to individuals that didn't believe in God, as opposed to a message to those that did.

Had no idea you are an aetheist!! It goes against all science - QuantumPhysics -all the latest findings( and realizing all the ancient truths are viable)To lose faith in God is to discount the very you - your soul! And a spiritual person lives in the "now", creating his/her life daily with their high vibrations. Reading what you just wrote is the greatest insult to all humanity & God - we are contiunually evolving. I receive many emails ot the spiritual nature of all life and have no space and no desire to read what you just presented. I choose to let you go to wallow in your misery - therefore goodbye now and forever more. Remove me from your list now!

Thank you and Blessings (for you really need them and they are sincere)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My response:

I am not an aethiest :)

You may wish to re-read my post.

However it is acceptable, surely, to humour those thoughts.

To analyze life and our beliefs, and to understand the value in life *even if there wasn't a God*.

This, if anything, gives hope to the atheist -- who may be disheartened with life.

To simply believe something because we've been told it is not really a sensible way to live.

As an aside, I do believe in "my version" of God -- and spend much of my time wallowing in happiness :)

I hope my blog posts are testimony to that.

Love, Karlos

Can You Help Me?

Today, I'm in search of fame.

Yes, it's that time again -- where I'm looking to replenish the bowels of Self Dev Radio and Writers FM with a whole host of new and exciting guests!

Now, in case you don't know, I am the main interviewer guy behind the two above stations -- broadcasting self-development and writing interviews, respectively.

As such, I'm currently on the look out for NEW and EXCITING GUESTS for the stations. Preferably individuals who are truly KNOWN within the industry.

For example, on Writers FM, I've interviewed the likes of Bernard Cornwell, Syd Field, and Edwina Currie. And I may just have Joanne Harris and Sue Grafton lined up.

Do YOU know any WELL-KNOWN AUTHORS that may be interested in sharing their secrets?

Elsewhere, and over on Self Dev Radio, I've spoken with wise-types such as James Arthur Ray, Fred Alan Wolf, and Hale Dwoskin.

Are YOU friends with any famous self-help gurus?

If you know someone in the public eye that just might be interested, write to me.

Send a mail to karl AT karlmoore.com, and put my name ("Karl Moore") in the subject line, to ensure it gets past the sp@m filter.

I'd be forever grateful -- and I *really* appreciate all of the help given.

Here's to a great series of fresh 2008 interviews! :)

(PS. If you'd like to listen to some of my recent interviews, check out www.karlradio.com)

Over 365 Blog Posts Later...

This time last year, I made a koan.

I promised to post daily here at Karl Blog.com for a whole year.

And I've done it!

Every day, I've posted at least one message -- sometimes many. I've posted a whole bundle of Random Acts of Kindness, and an awesome series of Friday Factoids.

Occassionally, I've missed a day or two.

But, apparently, I'm only human.

It's been an amazing experience. I've found that being forced into writing each day has really kick-started my spirituality at the points I needed it most. I've discovered everything -- from the true size of our universe to the secret history of the keyboard. And I've done more RAKs than ever before -- especially on a Monday.

Yes -- daily blog writing is a koan I'd recommend to anyone.

(Incidentally, due to increased business matters, I've yet to decide what I'm going to do in future. I expect that during 2008 my blog posts will become slightly less frequent -- however hopefully much deeper than ever before!)

So... my question today is...

What's YOUR koan for 2008? (Learn more here.)

What can YOU do that will stretch your boundaries? What challenge will change your life?

What kind of new person will you be in exactly 366 days time? (Yup, 2008 is a leap year!)

As Mahatma Gandhi says... "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

Do it!

Your seconds on this earth are limited -- and are continuously being frittered away reading crazy posts like this.

Go, start living -- and enjoy every second!

Merry Christmas!

This is a random blog post.

Unlike most of my messages, it has no real theme.

Today's post is partially a Monday Random Act of Kindness, partially a message of inspiration, partially a greeting for the holidays, and wholly a big dollop of love.

Why?

Because Christmas is here. It's the time for you to open your heart and embrace the world around you.

You see, anyone that knows me... knows one thing.

I love this time of year!

It's magical. People everywhere -- at least those not caught in the crazed, ever-busy last-minute gift rush -- open their hearts and become just a little more loving.

It's the time we can officially be jovial and say "I LOVE YOU!" without feeling like an idiot.

It's rationed happiness.

Of course, you could be like that all year round -- and feel great as a result. But if you don't, AT LEAST do it for Christmas, and live every minute of the holidays to the full!

So, what can you do to get into the Christmas spirit?

Well, Random Acts of Kindness are a fantastic way to start!

They're small acts of kindness, done for the good of some stranger, solely for the purpose of making their like more joyful -- without expecting anything in return!

http://www.karlblog.com/blog/labels/random%20acts%20of%20kindness.html

Let me give you some examples.

This week, my mother donated much of her wages to abandoned cat and dog charities up in the North East of England. (And my mum has a lot of big bills to pay!)

On Saturday, I helped an elderly man overloaded with bags up the steep hill to the local train station.

Last night, I gave a surprise visit to an elderly friend -- and decorated his otherwise-Christmas-free house with bright tinsel and wreaths and "Merry Christmas!" signs. They cost me 7 in total, and changed his mindset completely!

Those are just a few festive Random Act's of Kindness you can use to change someone else's life -- and make yourself feel great at the same time.

A Random Act of Kindness is, after all, simply an act of love.

And what is Christmas if not love?

Before signing off today, I'd like to give you a couple of quick Christmas gifts.

Firstly, if you haven't yet downloaded the Karl Blog.com Christmas screensaver, then click here to learn more and download your copy for free.

Secondly, I've prepared an official greetings card just for YOU!

Please... I'd like you to ask that you take two seconds out to visit the following site and listen to my message...

I guarantee it'll pep up your day.

And so, as this glorious day slowly retires and the sound of sleighbells gently ring in the distance, allow me to wish you... a very, very merry Christmas!

With love, with happiness, with a big smile and wide pupils... I wish you all the very, very best.

:)

This Is Your Muse Calling

Are you looking for ideas?

Do you need to connect with your inner muse?

Whether you're a writer, an artist, or just someone looking for fresh ideas, I thought I'd put together a quick blog post today with ideas for generating fresh, new ideas.

So if you've found your creativity is sticking, then try these to help get your genius juices flowing again...

1. Take a walk. When you're stuck in front of a blank page, frustration can soon block your connection with the muse. A walk in the fresh air will boost your circulation and engage your senses. Ideas will pop into your mind more readily.

2. Visit an art gallery. Look at the stories behind the images and you'll have an endless supply of material to draw upon.

3. Sit in a cafe, drink tea and watch the world go by. Notice people's colours, mannerisms, style and posture. People that come and go may inspire a character or an idea for a painting.

4. Visit a new place. Take your camera and note-book. Endeavour to learn 20 interesting things about this place.

5. Go to a museum. Focus on one item that really takes your interest and learn as much about the object as possible. When you return, write about the item or paint it.

When you have a block, often the best way of dealing with it is to go out and focus on something else for a while. You'll find it easier to return with a fresh outlook, and you may just have a plethora of ideas at your disposal that will boost your creativity.

Have a creative day!

I Had a Dream...

I had a curious dream this evening.

I rarely go to bed earlier than 4am, however accidentally dosed off on my new sofa just after midnight.

And I was suddenly transported to a memorial service, for Dudley Moore, held in my own apartment.

Present were Liza Minelli and a couple of close friends. In prayer, they were being appreciative of the life of Dudley Moore.

I however remained silent.

Until near the end.

When I suddenly said...

"To me, there will only ever be one Arthur. One sparkling Dudley Moore, with his wit, and his enthusiasm, and his charm.

"But amidst the tears here today, I've realized something even greater. I realized that we, as human beings, still find it way too difficult to wave goodbye to anything.

"We don't realize that it's better to have had something great in our lives for a short period of time - than to have never had it there at all.

"Surely that makes sense? And if it does, why aren't we all truly smiling - at the blessing we received?"

And at that point, a vision of Dudley Moore appeared -- smiling, in his Arthur character.

A little tipsy, he laughed and told us all to cheer up, did a little tap dance, then faded away.

We remained in silence -- until I woke up.

Yes, an unusual dream. But it really had an impact -- at least on me.

And so, today, take from this what you can...

Maybe you've recently lost something and are too busy focusing on the grief than the happiness of it's presence.

Or maybe you're taking life for granted, and not truly appreciating what you have today.

Either way -- take time out today to reflect.

And truly thank your own God for the blessings you have.

Happy Wednesday! :)

Juice Power!

Today, I'm asking a question...

I just bought myself a super-wizzy smoothie maker.

After many, many mistakes, I finally figured out how to use it ("You DON'T need to keep the middle filtration thing in while blending, Einstein!") -- and am drinking a good few smoothies every day.

But I want to know what else to add?

What fruit or additives do I add for increased energy? Skin-tone? Brain power?

Some people suggest protein powder (yuck). Others say you should add oils.

I'm confused. Which isn't difficult.

So, what do YOU think?

I want to make the perfect smoothie, jammed full of health benefits...

"What should I do? How should I make it? What do I need?"

Please mail me your suggestions to karl AT karlmoore.com -- before I put my vitamin A-Z into the blender.

I'll try the best out and let you know!

Thank you very much :)

I'm Not the Most Positive Man in the World

Just a quick second post here on this Monday morning...

September 13th was officially "Positive Thinking Day" -- and one of my friends wrote about a contest to find the world's most positive individual:

http://www.selfdevelopmentblog.com/development/2007/08/are-you-most-positive-person-in-world.html

This morning, I learned that I'd been voted for -- and came second in the competition!

That means "officially" I'm the second most positive person in the world :)

But hey...

To paraphrase Homer: "I'm just trying to spread some joy. I'm not running for Jesus!"

:)

I'm also giving away the competition prize to the person that sends the most inspirational personal story to me today (no rules, no limits) ... to karl @ karlmoore.com.

Thank you!

Great Wedding Gift Idea!

One of my good friends, Mel McIntyre, is getting married.

He's just sent me an invitation - and his gift list is the most inspirational I've ever seen.

He's not asking for crystal glasses. Or mocha towels. Or an ironing board cover from John Lewis.

His gifts include a mosquito net, a school textbook, a goat, garden seeds, a school desk, and blankets for a starving family.

Every single gift goes to help the less fortunate -- and, wow, what a FANTASTIC way to celebrate!

Mel is genuinely one of the most honest, friendliest and easy-going men I know.

He's written for The Stage, produced a series of GCSE revision books, and just snagged himself a children's book series publishing contract in Canada. You can learn more about him at www.topcopyguy.com.

You don't have to know Mel to donate.

How nice would it be if he receive a dozen special random gifts from the people that read this blog? Just another little Random Act of Kindness?

Here's the link to his "wedding list":

http://www.greatgifts.org/?GiftListID=2528&p=msguests

If you get chance today, make your donation and mention this blog. I'm going to.

You'll bring a smile to Mel's face... to my face... to YOUR face... and to the faces of many people less fortunate in the world.

Thank you :)

My Writers Circle Conference

Some of you know that I setup My Writers Circle way back in 2005.

It's a popular international writers circle with an incredibly friendly feel. It's headed by best-selling author Nick Daws, who does a fantastic job of keeping everything running smoothly.

Well, one of the site moderators, Lin, has been working on putting together the first My Writers Circle conference!

It'll be held in Holland and she's currently collecting details of those interested!

If you are, here's where you can learn more:

http://www.mywriterscircle.com/index.php?topic=9783.0

This is NOT a money-making venture. Lin is doing this purely out of the love of writing.

Check out the site, and maybe we'll see you there! :)

Help Abolish the BT Monopoly

Having spent a staggering four hours on hold with BT today, to cancel my new line order, today's post is something of a public service announcement.

If you live in the UK, you might have noticed something...

British Telecom have a monopoly on telephone lines. Although you can shift your service to other companies, the monthly service charge of £10.50 minimum is still forced onto you.

If you want a telephone you MUST deal with BT.

Well, why not join the petition to stop BT's monopoly?

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/NakedADSL/

Click on the above link and sign to join. You must be a British citizen.

It'll help to reduce the power over the telephone system currently held by BT.

Incidentally, I still haven't gotten my issue resolved. I have so many issues with BT, I practically have the Chairman's fax number on speed dial. My portable phone battery is now dying, I've been on hold that long.

Any tips? :)

If anyone reading this works for BT and can help -- please let me know!

Definitely Random!

Definitely.

It's not a particularly complex word. Yet millions of individuals from across the globe seem to have trouble with its spelling.

Today, I'd like to recommend a rather simple site designed to spread the good word:

http://www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com/

If you're routinely bemused by exactly which characters make up this word (and, most importantly, in which order), then click on the link today.

And please accept my apologies for being a pedant.

Happy random Tuesday! :)

Forum Update & Single Life

Over the past few days, our experiment on the "Love and Acceptance" forum has been outstanding.

There has had a good dozen individuals posting on the board, showcasing their inner dark side. And I've had treble that number in personal messages -- each of which I've responded to with a private voice message.

(If you haven't got a reply yet, I have a small backlog, and ten messages still to respond to.)

And allow me an observation...

Despite what you might think, every single "absolute dark secret" that you have is shared.

The top "dark secrets" surrounded sexuality issues, loveless marriages, secret affairs, guilt, and money. I had about five of each of these.

In other words, your worries AREN'T unique.

They're don't necessarily even NEED to be covered up, because there's someone out there experiencing them also -- ready to support you.

So if you'd like to join in the experiment, then visit the new board at:

http://www.karlforum.com/index.php?board=8.0

And unveil yourself. Empty your heart. Show your dark side.

See what happens :)

(PS. Not sure what I'm talking about? Read this post.)

(PPS. Prize for the most interesting question on the forum today goes to Janey Lee, who asked whether I was single. I am, folks! Anyone want to play Cilla Black?More here: http://www.karlforum.com/index.php?topic=144.0)

Karl is Hiring!

Slightly off-topic post today, but...

Would you like to work on my team?

I'm currently looking for a world-class site Web designer to join my fantastic gang of happy folk!

Right now, I have a wonderful designer on my staff. He's called Nomi, and he's responsible for practically *every* Web design you see associated with myself or any of our company sites.

Here's some of his work...

Over the past 18 months, I've desperately searched for someone that can match Nomi's talent.

It seems nobody can!

I've literally reviewed thousands of design portfolios, but I haven't found a second decent designer yet.

Are YOU a wonderful Web designer?

Or do you perhaps know a great designer who's looking for work?

If you do, then I'd like to hear about it! :)

(Yes, posting to my blog is a last ditch attempt. I've tried Elance, Rent-a-Coder, private companies, the works!)

My e-mail is karl@karlmoore.com.

Be sure to put my name, "Karl Moore," in the subject line to ensure it gets past my junk mail filter. Please include samples of recent designs, and I'll get back to you with more information.

Thanks for your time!

Normal Service Will Resume

John Lennon said that "Life is what happens between appointments."

For me, it's what happens between blog posts.

This past week has been crazily hectic, which is why the blog has been more than a little Ghost Town. My apologies for that!

However, as a quick catch-up, I've been devilishly busy on the interview front... so here's a quick update!

Bernard Cornwell... Famed author of the Sharpe series, a guy that's sold over 20 million books, the historical novel version of J.K.Rowling... HE spoke with me on Tuesday for an hour about his writing exploits.

During the interview, Bernard chats about his very unusual method of writing, his "love" of the French, and about receiving his OBE from Prince Charles last year.

Listen to the streaming version right now by clicking here!

Plus....

James Arthur Ray... Massively successful businessman, the star of "The Secret," the guy you recently saw on Oprah and Larry King Live... He's the Manifestation Master and he wants to share his secrets with you!

During the interview, James chats about the quickest way to manifest anything in your life, the seven laws of the universe (including "duality" - one of my favourites), and what "The Secret" *doesn't* tell you!

To listen to this streaming interview, click here now!

Mike Koster wrote in just a few moments ago and called it the "best James Ray interview yet." Check it out for yourself and see what you think!

That's all for now. Normal service will now resume.

Have a great day!

A Place of Placidity

The intention of this blog is to inspire - and bring a little peace and serenity into the lives of its readers.

Which is why today I'd like to suggest...

"If you're a super-fast driver, why not turn into a super-calm driver?"

Yesterday evening, I was returning to my home from Durham City - when a "bigged-up" Ford Fiesta suddenly appeared right on my bumper. Within about six seconds, he'd dangerously overtaken - and was about eighty miles ahead.

I, however, being a notoriously chilled/boring driver, continued to drive at my regular speed, while listening to the most glorious Yanni music in the world.

Ten minutes later and I approached the turn-off traffic lights, only to find in front of me the same Ford Fiesta, violently revving its engine.

He'd wildly overtaken and sped down the motorway, only to find himself a few metres in front of me. Hardly a world record.

Five miles of speeding. About five yards of gain.

And what if he'd been caught in his speeding endeavours?

Well, forgetting the usual fine and license points, he'd likely be made to sit a day in a driving school.

Consider this: How much SPEEDING would you have to do to constitute a WHOLE DAY in a driving school?

Answer: A LOT!

Speeding stresses people out. It's not necessary. It causes Road Rage.

And so my suggestion today is to take it a little easier when you're out driving. (Though I'm sure you take it easy already!)

Try to find your own place of placidity behind the wheel.

It won't make an ounce of difference to your arrival time - and you'll arrive feeling much better about yourself, too.

Have a great day! :)

Facebook Stuff

Well, I finally did it.

After much fuss, I finally filled out my Facebook profile.

Do you use Facebook?

If so, why not add me as a friend? Here's my profile link:

If I'm totally honest, I don't completely understand it. This whole social revolution thing has me confused. Way too much information.

When people whizz on about how they've hooked up with a billion old friends, I feel like an 80-year old getting told off for missing a bus that nobody told him was coming.

Still -- if you're hip and all that -- add me!

The Pareto Principle

Many years ago, when I used to work as a freelance development consultant, I entered the corporate offices of a large UK manufacturer.

I was only 18 at the time -- but I'd somehow landed this great job, outscoring the older applicants during the interview tests.

That's when I was informed of the secret plans of this group.

They intended to close down 80% of their factories...

They wanted me to build a system to help manage the whole downsizing and automation effort. Suddenly I remembered that my cousin worked for one of the factories they intended to shutdown.

"But why??" I asked. "They seem to be making you money!"

"Pareto principle!" they shouted back.

I just nodded at that point. I had no idea what they were talking about.

About three hours later, I knew what the Pareto principle was -- and I've been using it ever since. It's a way of thinking that can help you gain more pleasure out of ANYTHING...

The term comes from an Italian economist called Vilfredo Pareto. In the early 1900's, he made the mathematical observation that everywhere in life, 80% of consequences stem from 20% of causes.

It's commonly referred to as the 80/20 rule, and it means that...

... 80% of revenue comes from just 20% of the factories.

... 80% of orders come from 20% of customers.

... 80% of the world's money is owned by 20% of the people.

... 80% of your happiness is derived from 20% of your activities.

It's a rule-of-thumb measurement that genuinely works. I researched it. I applied it to my own life.

I realized that the Pareto principle... is real.

So, how can you apply the rule to yourself?

Well, ask yourself these questions...

.... Which 20% of your daily activites generate 80% of your income?

.... What 20% of your time brings you 80% of your enjoyment?

.... Which 20% of your spiritual development is bringing you 80% of your results?

And, like the factory owners, when you realize which 20% of causes are causing 80% of the results, you can decide whether to increase those causes, or let go of the 80% of wasted effort.

Enjoy :)

The Blessings of Billy

Today's post is in memory of my loving dog, Billy.

In the early hours of this morning, we had to make the gut-wrenching decision to have Billy put to sleep.

Anyone reading this that has ever had a close tie with a dog or cat will know that every such animal has it's own unique personality and character traits.

Billy was the son of our late boxer dog, Sadie. Throughout the past 10-1/2 years, he's been probably the most loving dog we've ever owned. He was incredibly fun and highly sociable (with most!), extremely reliable and protectively loyal.

A real personality... A dog most people fell in love with, VERY quickly!

Every single day I'd go walking with Billy -- and I'm sure I'll be lost without that.

I won't go on about Billy's recent illness, but I would like to thank everyone who sent their kind thoughts, healing energy, and suggestions to help overcome the brain tumour that caused him pain.

I appreciate every single effort.

I'd like to end my post here, as today has been a little draining.

To finish, I'd like to quote the artist Renoir, who said:

And finally, artist Renoir who said:

"The pain passes, but the beauty remains."

In thanks for the blessings of Billy... x

England vs the UK vs Great Britain

I've had a few USA bods get in touch yesterday about the Friday Factoid.

"I had NO IDEA that England wasn't the UK. What's the difference?!?"

Well, allow me to explain.

The UK is the short version of the "United Kingdom," which is the short version of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

The UK consists of four countries: England; Wales; Scotland; and Northern Ireland.

In other words, all of the red bits on this map:

UK Map

Now, the biggest red island on that picture is called Great Britain. Yes, Great Britain is the name of the island itself, not the name of a country.

Great Britain is split into three parts: England, which covers most of it; Scotland, which is situated at the top, the "head" of the UK; and Wales, which is off in the west "hip."

London is the capital of England, which is in the south. Cardiff is the capital of Wales, and Edinburgh (pronounced "Ed-in-brer") is the capital of Scotland.

Now, the small red blob off to the left of the big red blob is Northern Ireland, which is of course part of Ireland itself. And if you take the whole of the UK and Southern Ireland, you get what we call the British Isles.

Trust me: It's simpler than it sounds.

There are no physical barriers or tolls between the countries, and everyone can travel between the countries freely. Yes, Wales does have its own language, but most people speak English too.

And the accents across the countries are diverse. England has everything from James Bond to The Full Monty. When you think of Scotland, think Billy Connolly. And when you think of Wales, think Tom Jones, minus the Californian tint.

And so there we have it...

The difference between England, the UK and Great Britain.

I'm sorry if this post has bored a few UK readers. But who knows... Maybe a couple of us have learned something too!

Have a GREAT Saturday! :)

Happy Valentines Day!

First things first...

I love you! :)

Love Karl x

xxx

Yes, it's Valentines Day... and with everything thing that's happened recently, I almost missed it.
Of course, I don't have a date tonight. I remain the eternal bachelor.

However I do commiserate myself with humorous facts and figures...

For example, according to Brain Candy, did you know that 15% of US women send flowers to themselves on Valentines day? And 3% of pet owners give their animals a gift, too!

Hallmark sell over 1330 different Valentines day cards -- and during the three days surrounding Valentines, over 110 million roses are given in the States.

Valentines day has history too...

Alexander Graham Bell applied for his dodgy patent on the telephone on this day way back in 1876. In Victorian times, it was deemed bad luck to sign a Valentines card. And in Wales, wooden love spoons are traditionally given as symbols of affection.

But I'd like to end my extra post today with a great little anonymous quote I picked up this morning...

"I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon."

Well said! :)

See you tomorrow!

Play, Today!

It was some years ago now, on a cold Sunday morning.

I was sat at the breakfast table with my ex-girlfriend, discussing how we could spend the day together.

"Uhm," I pondered. "How about going to the swimming baths?"

At the time, I was living a short drive from the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, with its log flumes, wave machines and float rings.

"What for?" she replied, slightly bewildered.

"Well.... just to play!"

"I don't play!" she exclaimed. As though "play" was a dirty word.

The relationship ended a couple of weeks later.

Now, I may be getting a little older here, but there's no harm in keeping the inner-child alive.

And that prompted me to ask this question today...

Are YOU treating life way too formally?

Peter Ustinov once said:

"It is our responsibilities, not ourselves, that we should take seriously."

Are you drowning in your own self-importance?

Perhaps your life is feeling way too humourless at the moment?

And even if you're overflowing with joy... WHY NOT push for that extra smile, just for today?

Smile RIGHT NOW! Then pass it on!

Let's change the world today. Who knows what we might affect.

Moore's Law

In the tech industry, Moore's Law is a well known concept.

It has, I'm afraid to say, nothing to do with me.

Its creator was 77-year old Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, who predicted that the number of transistors on a circuit board, at minimum cost, can double every 24 months.

His predictions have stood the test of time -- and this exponential growth in tech-capability is one of the reasons the world today is moving at a pace never seen before.

And doesn't that just remind you that these days.... life is all about speed.

Drive-thru, Microwave, Buy It Now, Miles Per Hour, Instant Access...

Let me ask you...

When was the last time you actually sat back and took a little of what I call "Me Time?"

When did you last invest a few minutes... in yourself?

What is so important... that it can't wait for five minutes... while you sit back and enjoy watching God in motion?

Mahatma Gandhi said: "There is more to life than increasing its speed."

Do you believe that?

And, more importantly - Do you live it?

Think about it. Then grab yourself a cup of tea - and get ready to enjoy the day!

Think Before You Eat...

I was sat thinking yesterday evening...

About how many chickens are sold and eaten every single day. In all of the restaurants, in all of the KFC outlets, in all of the supermarkets, in all of the world. Every single day.

We're talking millions here.

And then I remembered a film I'd seen not so long ago.

It was a PETA expose about cruelty to chickens, and the terrible conditions within "battery hen" farms. And I use the term "farm" in the loosest of manners. Most hens never get to see the fresh light of day.

Now... this blog is all about positivity.

When Mother Teresa was asked if she'd protest against war, she declined.

Instead, she insisted on promoting peace.

Think hard about that one.

There's a difference!

In today's blog post, I'd like to share with you two videos that you may find disturbing. They're truthful and honest, but still rather shocking. Conditions in some of these chicken farms are terrible.

But I DON'T want you to as an excuse to sit back and cry about the "pain of it all!"

That's giving energy to the negative.

Instead, take Mother Teresa's approach and simply switch to the positive.

Concern yourself with animal welfare. Take positive actions to help create a more enlightened world. Discover PETA in the US or UK. Make a donation. Sign a petition. Take ACTION.

You can watch the two "battery hen" farm cruelty videos I saw today by clicking here, and here.

And remember... Every journey begins with a single step.

Which step in a POSITIVE DIRECTION are you going to take today?

Merry Christmas!

This is the post you knew would be coming.

Because... the season of the soul is upon us.

As I sit here listening to Maria Carey's "All I Want for Christmas", I feel a wave of festive happiness flowing through my body again.

It's the feeling I have whenever I reach the end of the A Christmas Carol (in Muppet, Bill Murray, Alistair Sim, or vanilla flavour). Or when I see my family again after a long journey. Or I view the cathedral in my home town... or new lovers smiling and holding hands...

What do these images invoke in your mind?

And what if you could hold those feelings all year round?

In my blog post today, I'd really like to wish YOU a happy Christmas.

And that comes from a deep place of intense love, with a burst of pleasure and a sparkle of fun. I mean it... I really do.

"Merry, merry Christmas!"

I also have a special Christmas card online right now to wish you my best this season...

Click on the link to view the card. You'll enjoy it ;)

And this Christmas, I'd like to ask you just ONE favour...

If you've enjoyed reading my random thoughts over the past few months, please, please -- read or watch "A Christmas Carol" this year. You can buy the book version for just a few pennies these days, or read it online for free.

It's my favourite Christmas story, without question.

If your heart is closed, or you feel unloved, or you don't even feel that Christmas is really "here" yet, then this book will open you up. I guarantee it.

It'll expand your mind -- and you'll feel the love.

Let this blog be your inspiration.

Again... Merry Christmas. Pass it on x

* * *

There's magic in the air this evening, magic in the air
The world is at her best, you know, when people love and care
The promise of excitement is on the night will keep
After all, there's only one more sleep till Christmas!

The world has got a smile today, the world has got a glow
There's no such thing as strangers when a stranger says hello
And everyone is family -- we're having so much fun
After all, there's only one more sleep till Christmas!

Your vs You're!

I must admit that when it comes to the English language, I can be somewhat pedantic.

But as Ricky Gervais reminds us in The Office, a pedant is just somebody that wants things to be right.

And what's so wrong in that? ;)

Which is why I'm writing today about the apparent total confusion between the words "your" and "you're". Not my usual type of post, I agree -- but deserved of time nonetheless.

Yesterday, I purchased a Dr Hook CD.

Not for me, incidentally. But it was an official release from one of the big studios, and listed one of his most famous songs as:

"When Your In Love with a Beautiful Woman"

It seems much of the Western world have absolutely NO idea that YOUR indicates possession, whilst YOU'RE is simply an abbreviation of "YOU ARE".

"When Your In Love with a Beautiful Woman" actually makes no sense at all.

And then just today, my good friend Mark forced me to sit through a re-run of that popular hit 80's "detective romance" drama, Hart to Hart.

During one outtake, the studio crew cheer -- and a big sign falls down in the background, stating:

"Robert Wagner -- Your a Great Guy!!"

Huh?

One month ago, a very well-known author friend of mine, Nick Daws, suggested that he composed a "Good English Usage" guide for writers.

I commented that it would be very well received.

But I've changed my mind.

A "Good English Usage Guide for Everyone Else" would instead be much more appreciated.

Do you make common mistakes in the English language?

If so, subscribe to Nick's newsletter at http://www.nickdaws.co.uk/ and receive updates when his new guide is ready.

Or, to begin now, click here to check out common English language mistakes -- and how to very easily correct them.

A ten minute investment today may prevent a lifetime of "silly" errors.

Try it out. Be a pedant. Do it right.

(Must dash. Mark appears to have exploded the chicken and sweetcorn soup. Joy.)

Don't Mention the War... Or God!

During one of my early blog posts, I mentioned God.

A dreaded word, that: "God".

One very good friend of mine commented: "I love the blog, but sheesh, weren't you going a bit far by mentioning 'God?'"

Well, possibly. But it really depends on what your definition of God really is.

Maybe God... is You!

Now there's a mind-expanding thought, at least for some.

Let me explain what I mean.

Organized religion can be a very restrictive force. It provides imagery of a God to be feared -- and the religions tell you how to live in response. They preach: "You need to seek the approval of God -- and shun anything that He may see as betrayal".

But let's think about that.

The concepts of "wanting approval", "desiring vengeance" and "feeling betrayed" are just limiting feelings, created by man. Just like good, bad, hope and fear... they're man-created emotions driven by limited thinking.

Expand your mind... and ask yourself...

Do you think that God could even feel betrayed?

Do you think God would be LIMITED by such feelings?

Or do you think He may be way beyond all of those human emotions?

Do you think He'd see a difference between good and bad? Or do you think He'd simply be aware of an experience?

Remember, the Bible didn't say that God was made in man's image.

What a presumption!

It said that man was made in God's image.

So what if WE'RE all Gods?

(Or, at least, part of one big "beingness" that may be God?)

And we're currently limiting ourselves by imposing these feelings on our mindset?

Scary concept? Maybe.

But what if we each hold the power to create our own reality, to mould our experiences of the world as we encounter it?

The intention of this blog is not to preach, nor deny anyone's belief system. No sound-minded Englishman would ever do such a thing. Tsk. The very notion.

Rather, my intention here is to stimulate thought.

In one popular episode of Fawlty Towers, hotel "boss" Basil hilariously warns his staff about the German guests: "Don't mention the war!!!" -- and then finds himself barely able to contain the topic!

Basil mentioned the war. And by mentioning God, am I going just a bit too far?

For some, maybe. But have you ever sat down and thought -- seriously -- "What is God?"

And if you haven't, maybe it's about time you did.

Maybe you have preconceived ideas that are holding you back. Maybe "it" is not a separate being at all. Maybe God is simply the life that is inside and all around you.

Maybe in trying to describe God, you'll find yourself like a fish trying to describe the water it swims in.

Contemplate it. The answer, if you find it, just might surprise you.

Good night!

"La Grande Ambition des Femmes Est d'Inspirer L'amour!"

I don't usually like to talk about "favourites".

Favourite colours (Yellow), favourite foods (Chinese), favourite coffee (Yuck!).

But today, I'm breaking my personal rule, because I'd like to share with you my favourite three films. Because they're each significant enough to really change your lives in a positive way.

And maybe you'll benefit from that, right now :)

So, in no particular order, here are my top three Hollywood hits...

-- Playing by Hearts

I referenced this great film in my "Falling in Love with Yourself" post. It follows eleven curious individuals each battling with love in Los Angeles.

Some find it, some don't.

But they each benefit in some way. Even if only by their problems.

Very witty. Very thought-provoking. Very deep.

My favourite quote: "What, is that a rhetorical question? Why is my life so complicated? Gee, I don't know. Why is your life so f**king simple?"

Okay, moving on...

-- The Six Degrees of Separation

When two rich New York art dealers are suddenly imposed upon by a young man claiming to know their kids from Harvard, they take him into their lives. He enchants them, no doubt.

But all the time, he's lying.

However, it's not a sinister lie. It's a sweet, innocent lie that begs for their approval. It's a lie that can be instantly forgiven - the sort of lie you almost beg people to deceive you with.

This is one witty, atmospheric film that forced me to fall in love with it after just the first sitting.

My favourite quote: "I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation between us and everyone else on this planet. The President of the United States, a gondolier in Venice, just fill in the names. I find it extremely comforting that we're so close. I also find it like Chinese water torture, that we're so close because you have to find the right six people to make the right connection... I am bound, you are bound, to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people. "

Moving on one final time...

-- Death on the Nile

As with all of my three films here, "Death on the Nile" was not well-received by critics. It was, madame, a flop.

And yet it remains one of my all-time favourite films.

Whilst not quite as deep as the former two, this classic Peter Ustinov film delivers a big dollop of wit in such a subtle manner that it takes perhaps a half-dozen viewings before you truly begin to understand the hidden humour.

You see, everyone is the film is a CHARACTER...

... Angela Lansbury (incidentally, Ustinov's sister-in-law!), Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Jack Warden... it's FULL of fantastically well-developed characters that wrap you straight into the story.

The music is gloriously powerful -- and although it's a traditional "Whodunnit", the ending will definitely surprise those that don't know the story.

For me, this is a "comfort film." I watch it over and over whenever I feel ill. And it never fails as the perfect medicine.

Hilarious - AND great.

Favourite quote (in addition to the French title of this post, from Moliere and quoted by Poirot, meaning "The great ambition of women is to inspire love")...

Jim Ferguson: You damn froggy eavesdropper.
Hercule Poirot: Belgian! Belgian eavesdropper!

* * *

And so, if you trust my taste enough, I'd invite you to rent or buy these movies from Amazon.

You might just surprise yourself...

Enjoy! :)

Ban Aunt Bessies!

A 17-year old home economics student walks into Marks & Spencer.

"I'll have these eggs, please. Oh -- and pass me a packet of cigs!"

The fierce-looking woman behind the counter looks down, suspiciously: "You got ID?" she gruffs.

"Ack. Forget it! I'll just have the cigarettes!"

* * *

Huh?

Yes, it sounds crazy -- but over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period, the police have banned stores from selling EGGS to under 18s.

In Market Harborough, the situation is even more dire.

Both flour AND eggs have been banned. Which means self-sufficient teenagers can wave goodbye to home-made bread or DIY Yorkshire Puddings for a while.

Time to call in Aunt Bessies, methinks.

Unless of course, she's banned too...?
